Q: What is LLS?

A: Since 1949, LLS has been dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services.

How did you become involved in LLS?

A: After I was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia in 2010, I wanted to do something to give back to a community that had given so much to me.  They helped fund the research for the medication I was taking at the time that allowed me to live a completely “normal” life, with none of the crazy side effects of typical chemotherapy.

I have always been one to enjoy being active, and the LLS has this awesome program called “Team in

Training”, where you raise money for the LLS while training for an endurance event.  I raised over $8,000 while training and completing my first event with Team in Training (Houston Marathon 2011).

While that medication ultimately did not work for me and my treatment of CML, it gave me the opportunity to live 9 months without traditional chemotherapy and raise some great money for a great cause.  In April of 2011, I found out my leukemia had “mutated”, and I was no longer in the remission I had achieved 6 months earlier.  I started traditional chemotherapy and after several rounds

I had a stem cell transplant on June 14th, 2011.  At that moment I decided I was going to do another event for the LLS…

and I did along with my sister, best friend, and stem cell transplant donor.  We raised over $7,500 for the LLS while training and completing the Nike Women’s Marathon this past October. I am now tackling my third event for the LLS…Oceanside Half Ironman in March 2013!
